about

A 2005 studio album recorded by the early OWL SOUNDS trio lineup of Adam Kriney/Gene Janas/Randy Borra. There was a malfunction of the computer recording gear that day so we recorded this using 4 microphones, into a mixer, into a VHS machine, direct to stereo VHS tape.

Original release blurb:
"Amazing and blazing new 40 minute tour CD from NYC freak-jazz unit OWL SOUNDS. You feel the colors green and yellow, you maybe even hear/here, a taste of blood, the smell of rhythms found in a bottle floating off South America, overboarded from a 1960’s cruise ship, feathers plucked from some alien peacock, I have seen and I have not seen, but fuck if I can explain it all. 8 cuts of roaring and mesmerizing free improvisation covering everything from 60’s era blow-outs, timeless drones, a Marion Brown piece, bastardized afro-cuban percussives, break-neck changes, swirls, and sways; definitely the best offering so far from these kids, totally unseen, yet undeniable and masterfully crafted.

Totally sick sounding, recorded with bare minimum equipment, straight to VHS tape, no shit! Comes in typically gorgeous Colour Sounds packaging, hand made, sewn sleeves, art/paint all over everything, fold out poster and limited to only 35 CD-R copies for the tour edition first press, and a second pressing of 34 CD-R copies with alternate artwork/handmade packaging scheme"

Owl Xounds New York, New York

Owl Xounds/Owl Sounds/Owl Xounds Exploding Galaxy were an undeniable force in the early 2000s NYC underground free- jazz/improv scene. They were deeply influenced by and sonically indebted to the early wave of 1960's avant-garde jazz music from such legendary cult labels as ESP-Disk and BYG Actuel. ... more
